First ride chat from Cedar Vale.

New to us, or not keen on the car? We start by talking about their carrier, past rides and what helps them settle.

How it works from Cedar Vale.

Close to home is a good place for a short first ride. We’ll plan it with you.

A first ride chat happens before any ride. It’s for pets who are new to us, new to travel or who find car rides hard. We talk with you about their crate or carrier, how they handle being lifted, how they’ve done in the car before and what helps them feel safe.

From there we plan their first ride together. It might be a short local trip first, a covered carrier for a shy cat, a slower hello at the door for a worried dog or a ride timed for a quiet part of the day.

Everything we learn goes onto their travel tag and into their notes, so every ride after starts the same calm way. If we think a different kind of help would suit your pet better, we’ll say so honestly.

How the ride goes.

  1. First

    A chat with you

Call or send a request. We ask about their travel history, their carrier and what helps them settle.

  2. Then

    A plan for ride one

Where to, which carrier or crate, the time of day and what the hello at the door should look like.

  3. Ride day

    A slow start

A calm hello, time to settle into their travel space and something familiar from home.

  4. After

    Their travel notes

We tell you how it went and write down what helped, so the next ride starts the same way.

Dog or cat, it’s planned around them.

What changes for each passenger on the first ride chat.

Dogs

  • Practice short car trips with treats in the weeks before
  • Tell us if they’ve been unwell on drives
  • A familiar harness or crate makes a real difference

Cats

  • Leave the carrier out at home for a few days before
  • A covered carrier often helps shy cats
  • Tell us if they’re easier to lift in a towel

Making the carrier a good place.

Most cats only see their carrier when something worrying is about to happen. Leave it out in a room they like with the door open and a blanket inside, and drop a treat in now and then. By ride day it’s just another place to sit.

For dogs, a couple of short practice trips help: in the crate or harness, around the block and home again, with a treat at the end. If your vet has given you advice about travel, tell us so we can plan around it.

Pickups in Cedar Vale.

A few things that help the hello at your door go smoothly.

  • Front doors and gates

Tell us which door to use and where we can stop. Keep gate codes with you and meet us at the gate.

  • Busy school mornings

If the school run makes your street busy, tell us. We’ll agree a time that keeps the hello calm.

  • More than one pet

Tell us about every pet traveling. Each one rides in their own secured space.

In their bag.

  • Their carrier or crate, out at home for a few days
  • A blanket or toy that smells like home
  • Notes on what helps them settle
  • Any travel advice from your vet
  • A quiet morning before the ride

What we’ll ask you

  • How they’ve done in the car before
  • Their carrier or crate, and how familiar it is
  • How they react to being picked up
  • What helps them settle, and what doesn’t
